Survival 101

How to prepare for an emergency or disaster

Although you may be living the time of your life right now, things can change in the blink of an eye. This is why you need to have a proper emergency preparedness skill, as it will help you move along and stay away from any potential dangers. Plus, natural disasters and emergencies can end up being catastrophic for your area. Lots of people lost their loved ones during natural disasters, so knowing how to prepare for them is a pivotal thing to focus on. With that in mind, we created a list of ideas and tips that will help you increase your chances of survival!

Know the tools you need to survive!

The first thing you should purchase is an emergency survival kit. In case you are cut off from other people, you need to have the medical tools and survival products that will help you stay alive. If you are at home, you can opt for a larger emergency kit, and here you can add all types of products and tools that may come in handy for you.

Usually, your survival kit list should include the following:

  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Pocket knife or multitool
  • Canteens
  • Lighter
  • Crowbar
  • Water storage/filter
  • A small shovel
  • Tinder
  • Gloves
  • Scissors
  • Cable
  • First aid kit
  • Duct tape

Some of the items above you can get for FREE via our website.  Click on survival resources to learn more.

Obviously, the disaster preparedness kit will be different based on each one of us. But it is an excellent idea to try and adapt this list based on your needs. Some of us will need fire steel; others want a small tent, so adapting your emergency kit is a priority here.

Stock up on water

The human body won’t resist that much time without water. So, if you do have to deal with a disaster, you may end up stuck in a place without any water, and this can be very hard for you. What you have to do is to have at least a few gallons of water near you. Plastic bottles will be more than ok here. Store them in a place where it’s very easy to access them.

Repair your home

You don’t have to wait for disaster to strike. The best emergency preparedness plan is to protect your home from potential damage. Replace the solid gas lines with flexible lines, nail plywood correctly, verify whether your house is bolted properly or not as well. See if you have any electrical wiring or leaky gas issues. If there are, fix them immediately as they are fire risks. You will also want to brace the overhead fixtures too, as this is critical to do!

Know your home

One of the best disaster preparedness ideas is to fully know your home, inside and out. You have to know where all the utility shutoffs are, in case disaster will strike. You also need to create an emergency plan, for example, you can create a dedicated refuge place in the basement with a tent and food. It’s important to test the emergency response plan, just to ensure the safety of your loved ones. Make sure that the flammable materials are stored away from any doors or windows. Placing that in the basement may be a good idea. Trees near your home should be trimmed and maintained in proper health. Otherwise, you can end up with tree damage.

Stock up on food

Obviously, the best survival supplies need to be a part of your emergency plan as well. Some of the best emergency supplies are the canned goods. Yes, they may not be the healthiest foods out there, but they last for a very long time. So you can easily store them in your basement. The good idea is to plan for at least 3 cans of food for each person/day. The more cans you have, the better. You should also have some foods that are ready to eat. Other dehydrated foods and long shelf life freeze foods should be included here too. If you have a pet, stock up on that too.

Self defense

If you want to survive in case of a disaster, you will also have to think about thieves. So, learning some self-defense tricks can come in handy. You will find that karate, bullet proofing your home, owning a taser and even having a bow and arrow will come in handy. Owning a gun may seem like a good idea, but the reality is that a gun can be hazardous for your home. Unless you know what you are doing, it’s an good idea to stay away from owning a gun, at least for the beginning!

Shelters and medical equipment

We already mentioned that aside from having survival supplies like food, you also need a first aid kit. However, some general medication like aspirin and ibuprofen, maybe even some other painkillers can easily come in handy. And aside from your survival tools, you will also need a shelter. A wool blanket/sleeping bag is necessary, a small heather, maybe some warming pads and a small tent will be very useful.

Everything from an AM/FM radio to a mobile phone that has a long battery life, weather radio, a list of phone numbers to contact the authorities and other similar things can come in handy. Efficiency and durability should be your primary concern here, so keep that in mind.

Every good survival kit should include sanitation products. Feminine hygiene items, liquid soap, a tooth brush and paste, latex gloves, garbage bags, tissue rolls and some disinfectant should be at the top of your survival kit list. If you have a baby, consider adding some baby care products too, as those are very important!

Other things to consider

Whenever you think about emergency preparedness, you have to think ahead and figure out what you may need. Obviously, you will require at least a set of spare clothes and maybe even some boots. A portable phone battery system can also come in handy. Some spare money will help too. And, of course, some duplicate credit cards, photocopies of the IT and even some additional keys will help you stay prepared for an emergency!

If you always wanted to prepare yourself for an emergency, you will see that this quick set of guidelines will help you achieve your goals. Don’t rely on a quick emergency response, instead try to create your survival kit. Once you prepare for the worst, you will not have to deal with any major problems in the long term. So, try to do all you can to eliminate any potential problems beforehand. It will be a much better experience in the end!
